Recently, the newest Resident Evil broke a record by becoming the highest-rated video game adaptation movie on Rotten Tomatoes. It has now sparked discussion within multiple fandoms: gamers and horror movie buffs. Both fandoms have their own battles within themselves, but mostly, the gamers love the new film due to its gaming relatability, while film buffs aren't so happy with it due to its non-canonical story.
I could go on about how I think nobody should be swayed by any ranking system when it comes to art, but I won't… For now.
Anyways, I digress. This new film has sparked a lot of discourse and, honestly, I get each side. When any fandom has tension, the discussions are a huge part of what comes out of it. Yes, I appreciate those. They provide you with fresh POVs for the particular content. However, my favorite spark that blossoms during fandom discourse is the humor. Oh baby, the memes that come out of nerds arguing online is simply beautiful! And I say nerds with the most respect, since I am a nerd of both the Resident Evil games and past films.
I still remember the first time I played Resident Evil back in the 90s. I was yelling the entire time because I was so scared of every corner I had to turn. I thought that they could never top how scary that one was. Lo and behold, after that, each game they released just got scarier and scarier. The last one came out, and even though I am a full-grown adult now, I could not even play it myself; I was hiding every time I was supposed to be fighting. I ended up just watching a friend play and screaming at them what they should do, more like a choose-your-own-destiny story where I could hide behind a pillow if I needed to.
Also, this might be a hot take, but I did not think the films back in the early 2000s were as scary as the games. Maybe that's because I didn't have the controller, and it wasn't up to me where the main character went and what they did, but the jump scares were just not as satisfying. And I am a jump scare addict!
All in all, if you like the games, the past films, or even just scary movies in general, what I have deduced from the general consensus online is that you most definitely have to see this movie. Plus, it's spooky season, so why wouldn't you want to go experience a fun jump scare?
